Two months after Partition, on the 27th October 1947, St. Joseph’s Hospital, Baramulla Which was under the direction of Franciscan Missionaries of Mary, was attacked. One sister was killed. The Nun sisters had to evacuate the Hospital and found shelter in St. Catherine’s convent, Rawalpindi.

Brief History of St. Raphael’s Hospital, Faisalabad
Lyallpur located one hundred and seventeen kilometers west of Lahore, was founded in 1890 by the British Lieutenant Governor of the Punjab, Sir Charles James Lyall, after whom it was named. In 1904 it had a population of only four thousand but now Pakistan’s third largest city after Karachi and Lahore, with a population of 2.6 million. At the time of partition, it was known more for its grain market, but after independence it moved rapidly on the path of progress. In 1977 the name of the city was changed from Lyallpur to Faisalabad, after late King of Saudi Arabia, Shah Faisal-bin- Abdul Aziz.Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit. The Hindu owners had been forced to flee at the time of Partition, leaving the newly unfinished hospital of fifty beds in the care of the Mission to Bishop Cialeo, and Bishop urged the sisters to take it over.
Bishop Francis B. Cialeo, a man of action. In December 1947 when Bishop Cialeo contacted the Franciscan Missionary of Mary concerning the Jawalla Dass Charitable Hospital for women in Lyallpur, did not want to miss the opportunity of acquiring the hospital, and assured the sisters that if Institute later decided not to take it, he would approach another congregation to do so.
The call to Lyallpur was accepted and on Thursday 15th January 1948, a party of six FMM left St. Catherine’s Rawalpindi, at 5 pm. Because it was safer to travel at night. The sisters reached Lyallpur on the 16th January 1948 and began to work the following day. 12 July 1951given to lease for 20 years, then it was offered to sale seven years later and permanent arrangement
finalized in September 1960. The name was changed to St. Raphael’s Hospital. First hospital name is Jawalla Dass Charitable hospital Lyallpur.
Sr. Francis Mary who accompanies them was going to en route to Renala Khurd.
The first patient was admitted to the Hospital on the 10th of February and visit to the Refugee Camps were also begun. This work was to continue until 1953 when the last of refugees who were living in huts near the hospital were re-housed.
Midwifery Training School
In 1957 the Midwifery Training School was started by Sr. John Kentigern. The sisters have also begun home visits to the people and home deliveries were also begun.
A small Laboratory was added in 1959 and this work was extended when the new laboratory was opened in 1993.
Since the beginning there was a Nursery and provision for the care of sick children. In 1971 the new block for pediatrics was blessed and officially opened by Bishop Cialeo. This work continued for ten years until the decision was made to close this ward due to pressure of work in the maternity wards.
